Are you getting what you want in your life right now? Are you on track to achieving your goals? If not, the chances are it is due to one of the reasons below. To address these and put yourself on the road to achieving your goals, you need to become the expert on your life. You can do this by honestly answering the following 5 questions.
What do I want for myself?
An obvious question maybe, but have you asked it before, and more importantly have you answered it? It is really an umbrella for a whole series of more specific questions which relate to all aspects of your life. Together they form the picture of what you are all about. What do you want to achieve in the key areas of your life such as health & fitness, career, relationships, family, education and any others that may be important to you? What is the true definition of success for you? What vision do you have for your life? Write down the answers that come up for you so you can formulate specific goals in each area.
What would this give me if I had it?
By answering this question, you are testing and reinforcing why it is important to you. This will be crucial later on when, as you begin to pursue your goals you face some difficult challenges that you will need to overcome.
What am I doing to create what it is that I say I want?
Whatever you want to achieve, you need a plan and some clear goals that reflect your vision. The process of creation is one of action, so taking daily, focused action steps towards your goals is essential if your vision is to become reality. If you are either not taking sufficient action, or your action plan is not taking you in the right direction, you will need to review it and make changes.
What stops me?
If the answer to this question is anything other than you yourself, you are likely making excuses for not getting what you want. This might make you feel comforted in some way but will likely lead to unhappiness as you miss your goals. Remember if it can be done and has been done by anyone else, then you can do it, and understand that the only thing preventing you from getting what you want ultimately is what you believe. The good news is that beliefs are not the truth, we only think they are therefore we can choose to change them if they don’t work for us. Identify if there are any beliefs you hold that might be limiting you in some way, such as doubts about your ability or attitudes to money, failure, or anything else. Challenge them and replace them with more empowering thoughts.
What do I need to do differently or better to get to where I want to be?
If you keep doing what you’re doing, you will keep getting what you are getting. With this in mind, look at what you need to change – is it your goals, your action plan, the way you think about yourself, your attitude or work habits, or something else?
When you are in the habit of asking yourself questions like these and answering them honestly, you will be well placed to meet and adapt to any challenges and opportunities that come your way.
